Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming

The theme of this report is: Give Me a Call, Let’s Get In Touch! I have been spending time over the last few months working at developing a Regional Meeting in the West. At this time I am looking at an August date in the Central California area, but have no firm information. I think a group of flower growers gathering together in the West would produce synergistic effects. Since we are so spread out in these wide open spaces, the West Region consists of Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California and what else Hawaii; it is a bit difficult to plan a short Regional Meeting. Ahh yes, I can see it now a little get together in Hawaii, wouldn’t that be wonderful?
Nonetheless, I won’t let a few miles keep us from a meeting. Even though we all are so busy in this business, it always is refreshing to take just a bit of time to get together and see and hear what other folks are doing. If you have any ideas for sites, speakers, topics for a meeting, please let me know. I am finally using the computer after resisting for several years and find that it is a pretty good way to get in contact with folks on my schedule and hopefully theirs as well.  So if you see a mysterious e-mail with ASCFG on it, you will know it probably came from me and I am looking for information, please don’t throw the e-mail away!
Our farm has been a member of ASCFG for several years now, and I know the quality of our flowers has greatly increased due to a great part from the information we receive from the ASCFG, either through their publications, conferences, or their on-line bulletin board, or just talking to other members.  I just wish the competition would become members also. When poor quality flowers arrive at any market, people quickly sour to flowers. If folks consistently had unique and lasting flowers for sale, I think we all would do a better business. Let me know if you have someone you would like me to send membership information to, so they can become better growers also.

I would like to promote a bit of a membership drive for the West. After recent discussion at the ASCFG board meeting, I am preparing to contact farmers’ market managers as a way to reach flower growers that I know must be out there and might be interested and benefit from an ASCFG membership and regional meetings. If you attend a farmers’ market and would like me to send your market manager some information on ASCFG, please let me know and we will get information sent out.
You will be reading elsewhere about this year’s conference to be held in Orlando, but I want to take this opportunity to encourage you to make the trek to the other side of the country. I got a peek at the preliminary sessions, tours and speakers at the board meeting and I think those of us in the West will find good information to take home. Since Orlando is a tourist mecca I think you will find good airfare rates. I don’t know how many of you might have children or grandchildren working for you, but my 10-year-old son Austin works on the farm and I am going to let him go to Orlando with me. If farming means he can go to Disney world, farming can’t be that bad, right? He’ll be happy and I’ll get up-to-date on flowers.
One final note, it has been decided that ASCFG’s 2006 National Conference will be held in California. This is exciting news. The ASCFG board is looking at a couple of locations and should be firming up the location soon. If you have any suggestions for tours or speakers for this meeting I would be interested in hearing from you also as we will be getting in the main planning phase soon.

“Then let me to the valley go,
This pretty flower to see,
That I may also learn to grow
In sweet humility.”
