Summer brings too much heat and heavy rains here to central Florida to continue growing. Most of us growers say we grow year ‘round but in truth we don’t. We suspend planting and sowing till August and, thankfully, take most of June and all of July off. The heat is just too oppressive to work in the field. Of course we can still produce crops but we are limited to heat-tolerant varieties. We use this time to travel north for vacation.

Speaking for myself, I will be traveling all the way up to Nova Scotia to see an old friend and grower who just retired from the University of Florida. That would be Everett Emino. Along the way I will stop to see some of our other members. Maybe even you, if you don’t mind visitors.

This sort of vacation is so much fun. We get a chance to see how other growers grow and we can share how we do things here in the far south. We all benefit from the experience and enjoy the great fellowship that comes with it. So look for me this July. I might be at your doorstep.

Believe it or not our plans for the National Conference are nearly complete. Our speakers are committed and the hotel arrangements have been finalized. Remember that you will have an opportunity to stay at the host hotel (Doubletree) at the conference rate of $99 for 3 days prior and 3 days after the conference. This is a very nice hotel just across from Universal Studios. I mention this because there is so much to do and see in this area. We already have plans to do things after the conference and we will get started on listing things to do and see before the conference.

The conference itself is surely to be the best you have ever attended since you joined ASCFG. I’m not exaggerating. Central Florida is the horticulturist Mecca in America. You are promised an experience you won’t soon forget.
