A Giant Leap Forward
You’ve likely heard the good news by now: the ASCFG has hired a full-time Education Director. Rebecca Marrall joined our staff in May; the phrase “hit the ground running” can barely describe her interactions and accomplishments since then.
One of her first projects was to create and coordinate a fundraiser for the ASCFG Research Foundation. Under Rebecca’s swift and efficient planning and execution, this garnered nearly $14,000. She has initiated a webinar series titled “Research and the Flower Farmer”, which will start in February 2023 and feature academic research funded by the Foundation. Read details of these programs on page 68, and see the ASCFG Events calendar in the Members Only section of ascfg.org
Projects for the ASCFG include another webinar series, this one based on enterprise topics for commercial cut flower growers, with topics such as access to farm capital, grant writing, creating and/or updating business plans, best practices for employee management and retention, and much more.
Rebecca will also assist with existing ASCFG services such as its Farm Tours, monthly “Ask an Expert” sessions, the Mentor Program, and future conferences. Planning for these events is well under way.
With a master’s degree in library science, Rebecca’s organizational skills are exceptional. She is an autodidact who delights in digging into technology and learning systems, and using them effectively for the ASCFG. We are already benefitting from her skills as she and Linda Twining work together to customize our online services. Another project is the inventory and organization of the ASCFG’s existing education content—a full-time job in itself.
To learn firsthand what educational opportunities members are looking for, Rebecca flew from her home in Portland, Oregon to both the conference in Massachusetts, and the ASCFG Farm Tour hosted at Piscasaw Gardens in Illinois. She spent a day at Erin McMullen’s Rain Drop Farms, just down the road in Philomath. If you’ve been lucky enough to meet her at one of those events, you know how warm and personable she is, and how the organization will benefit from her dedication.
We are fortunate to welcome her to the ASCFG team!
